We delivered significant improvement across key business metrics for a business facing significant macro-economic challenges:
We defined a clear and concise Mission, Vision and Purpose rooted in core Values as key components in cultivating a culture of team work, accountability and growth.
We identified and simply stated our strategic (3-5 year), annual, department and team member plans aligned to the MVP; critical in creating system alignment (human and financial) and in driving the business and fostering greater ownership, purpose and results.
We developed and deployed annual plans that were distilled into manageable quarterly action plans. Resources deployed and adjusted to support the business and financial objective in an effort to compete most effectively in the ever dynamic market.
We developed and executed detailed tactical action plans to ensure implementation, accountability and reporting of resource deployment (human and financial) to achieve our financial objectives and measure impact and ROI.
Our approach was rooted in a belief that strong financial performance and shareholder value was a derivative of a relentless focus on people, planning and execution. This focus was the catalyst of the unprecedented businesses results we achieved.
We made ongoing tactical refinements based on business performance as well as actionable internal and external consumer and business insights. The digital and dynamic market required an ability for us to be fluid and flexible while prudent, practical and calculated.
As we redefined our 3-5 year strategy and annual plan; we had to address our structure to ensure we could deliver on our strategy, financial goals and aspirations.
With a volatile sporting goods market and stiff competition, we needed to refocus and maximize our resources and efforts. We stated a clear MVP and Values that helped define our Culture and provide the guardrails for our decisions and actions supporting our new business model.
We defined six "evergreen" strategic priorities supporting the entire business and brand based on internal and external business and consumer insights.
Additionally, we developed and executed a more consumer and brand-centric approach. Allowing each sub-brand (category) to maintains its uniqueness while aligning to a broader strategic brand platform. This additive approach would maximize our resources and ROI (e.g. 1+1 = 3).
Understanding and leveraging each team members' passions and talents allowed us to maximize efficiency and impact in the organization while providing deeper purpose and meaning to each of them.
We restructured our corporate and field teams to execute our strategy and better serve our team members, consumers, customers and maximize our new business model and financial objectives.
We had a relentless focus on driving the efforts of the team based on leveraging individual strengths and passions. We prioritized our people to shift our Culture and drive our business forward.
We embraced our role as servant leaders in developing individuals and helping them reach their full potential.
The Values of an organization are foundational and a critical component in cultivating a culture of teamwork and accountability in support of the MVP.
At Mizuno, every single team member had the opportunity to participate in the development and implementation of our Bleed Blue! Values. This approach helped with greater individual and collective adoption and support of our Values.
Our 5-year, annual and 90-day rolling action plans were aligned to our MVP and Values. This helped drive greater clarity and meaning to our individual and collective efforts.
Additionally, aligning organization, team (department) and individual roles and goals is critical in cultivating a culture of excellence and accountability. We made significant progress in this area, but still had a lot of room for improvement.
Our team cultivated a culture of teamwork and accountability through daily stewardship by champions who modeled the Values and behaviors that transformed our culture. To assist with this effort, each team member was given a Bleed Blue! medallion; a subtle reminder they carried with them each day reinforcing HOW we aspired to behave internally and externally in driving our business forward!
One step in our on-boarding process was providing each new team member with a viewing of a short video (shown here). The video highlights the history, background, MVP, Values and overall organization direction. It proved to be one of our many useful on-boarding tools.
